How to choose a Wedding Photographer

When planning for a wedding, the importance of preserving the precious moments can never be under stated, be it the smiles and joyful expressions on everyone’s faces or the sadness and tears dropping off the bride’s eyes during the last few steps she takes out from her parent’s house.

If you’re a type who values photography, the task of picking a wedding photographer can become daunting…. after all, there are no re-takes. Your wedding is a once in a life time event, and you have only one try when picking a photographer. More than the money you spend, you are betting all odds on the photographer you choose for your special day… without being able to see the final product in advance. There are instances abound involving wedding photographers not delivering, and newlyweds being left disappointed and heartbroken.

So, I thought as a photographer it will be worth sharing with you few simple but effective tips to bear in mind that will ease your decision making while picking your wedding photographer and get your candid moments recorded as you would like them to be preserved.

Experience – You don’t want your photographer to be a novice using your wedding as a guinea pig. Busier isn’t always better either. If someone shoots over a hundred weddings in a year, the possibility is that they are either shooting back-to-back events, or they’re hiring associate photographers to fill in their shoes. You should, therefore, evaluate the way they handle the events. Few questions that you should ask yourself are: are they doing it all themselves? Do they look passionate about their job? Do they randomly pick freelancers as their associate photographers? Do they use the services of their students/newbies as their assistants?

Have a Budget – Fixing a budget for your wedding photographer is another important criterion while planning for your wedding. Even while planning on a shoestring budget, make sure you allocate just the right amount for your photographic needs. Remember, the right photographer can make a budget dress look breathtaking, but the wrong photographer can make a ‘Bridal Collection from Manish Malhotra’ look ordinary.

Don’t let a deep discount be your deciding factor. Good wedding photographers pay taxes, carry insurance and invest in high-end gear and professional-grade printing. So before you cut corners with a dirt-cheap photographer, ask yourself where would they cut corners.

See the Work – Before deciding on your wedding photographer make sure you view their work. Do you get that sense of awe? You are hiring an artist with an eye that should be able to sieve out the extraordinary moments from the mundane incidences. You would want your photographer to capture all those precious moments that you will cherish in the years to come.

Insist on seeing as much of their wedding photos as possible for you to make sure that you get good quality photos for the entire course of your wedding. Fifty odd best images shown to you in a slideshow that your photographer ever shot may be impressive, but that won’t give you a good sense for what your wedding photos will look like.

Know your Photographer — Make sure you like them as a person. Whoever you pick to be your photographer, he is going to be around you and your family for a considerable amount of time on a momentous day of your life. So, you would want to feel comfortable with them and more importantly… be able to trust them.

In my opinion, while choosing your wedding photographer keeping in mind the above four criteria will greatly increase your chances of striking the right chord.
